St. Timothy School: Moshi, Tanzania

  • Community identified Project

Mama Hope is proud to expand its outreach and advocacy work to Moshi, Tanzania in support of our new partner organization Tanzania Children Concern (TCC). TCC was founded in 2003 by James Nathaniel and Beatrice Elias, two teachers who recognized the dire need for education programs and health care services in their region of Moshi. This regions from education programs and health care services, extreme poverty, and high incidence of HIV/AIDS motivated TCC and the community to partner with Mama Hope, so they could help the children of the Moshi receive the education and care they deserve.

Having previously purchased 5-acres of land TCC simply required the funds needed to build the school. Moshi is also strategically located near several townships which will all benefit from the new school and its outreach opportunities.

  • Mama Hope's Efforts to raise funds

Raised $80,000 to fund the construction of St. Timothy's School

  • Impact/Community involvement in the development and ownership

Building St. Timothy’s school on these 5 acres will ensure that the destitute children of Newland and the surrounding areas will have a proper place to live, learn, and grow. The school will also have a health clinic that will distribute much needed drugs for HIV/AIDS patients, most of whom cannot afford the bus fare to town which is currently the only place that the medicines are distributed.

Mama Hope's micro-development approach enabled the community of Moshi to employee 440 workers to build St. Timothy's School. James of TCC reports that each worker cares for an average of 6 household members bringing the total people affected by the construction to 2,640. Once the school opens in the summer of 2010, school enrollment will triple and 36 permanent positions will be created. TCC estimated that almost $14,000 in annual salaries will assist over 200 community members with improved standards of living.

  • What your support will do...

Your continued support will go to finishing construction of the school, and a new health clinic that will distribute much needed medication for community members with HIV/AIDS including free HIV testing. Continued construction plans include a multi-purpose facility with classrooms that will eventually accommodate 300 students, living quarters for 100 children, a vocational training center, and a community garden. St Timothy's will serve as a school, orphanage, and community center where people can come for information, support, and health services.
